Thurs. Nov. 13th - 90 Mile
Beach
Leaving Naroona, the countryside is beautiful with rolling
valleys, mountains in the distance and very green. We think this is the best part of our drive.
After a bit of a drive we stop in Bega at the Bega Cheese Cooperative
and “i”. We head inside to view the
advertised museum and sample the cheeses at the cheese tasting area. We find the infamous 8 legged cow, an Aussie
oddity. After a nice tour through the
museum, gift store and cheese tasting (we like the Extra Tasty cheese) we stop
for a coffee and a delicious piece of GF orange cake. We watch the video of the cheese cooperative
history and it continues with their expansion into today’s grocery chains here
and abroad. A good story and one that we
enjoy.

The drive continues to be very picturesque. The road is very narrow due to the mountains
and you must concentrate on the road at all times. There is very little room for error in many
places with no shoulder, rock outcrops and oncoming traffic all at 100 km/hr.

As we get through the mountains and back towards the sea we miss the turn for Eden and head into the Merimbula area. We are down on the sea and the wind is blowing fiercely. We take the local board walk along the shore, with water sometimes on both sides. It is only wide enough for two people with no railings. I loved it, it took us into the mangroves and continued on past our hour hike. Lots of interesting fish were in the water. I was still very scared of meeting a snake!

We pass through Pambula, stopping in Eden for our daily
picnic. Of corn cakes, peanut butter and honey and an apple. We carry on to
Lakes Entrance as our destination.
The road through the forest is long and winding. We are now out of the mountains and it is
mostly forest. Finally, after a 3 hr
drive we are in Lakes Entrance. We stay
at Kickback Cottages for two nights. There is a lot to see tomorrow!
Black Swan, one of many! |
This is a very picturesque spot. There is a long sand peninsula parallel to the town, which shelters the town and harbour from the ocean. We crossed the inner waterway on the Cunninghame Arm Footbridge to the 90 mile beach. Tomorrow we will hike out to the end of the spit which is 2 km's long.
In town we find the local favourite fish’n chip shop. We stop and buy fish and chips. I even had gluten free! The Footbridge Fish and Chips was
amazing. We walked back to the park
overlooking the bridge and ate outside.
